What kind of name is Arkadi ?
Arkadi means a citizen of the ancient Greek city Arkadia (Arcadia).
This is how I got the name:
I am not Greek, I was born in Ukraine (at that time a part of the Soviet
Union) at the period of the government and public anti-Semitism. My parents
wanted to give me jewish name Aaron, but it meant to declare publicly that
I was Jewish. To make such kind of the declaration for their son in a very
anti-Semitic environment my parent were not ready. At that time jews were
fired from a lot of military and management jobs, public anti-Semitic acts
were quite popular. Nationality was written in everybody's ID (called Internal
Passport), but if your name is Aaron, nobody needs our ID to figure out
that you are jewish.
My parents decided to keep me out of trouble and
to give me a name, which sounded similar to Aaron, but was not jewish.
The closest name in the dictionary was Arkadi. The fact that the other
meaning for the name is a lucky man (Arcadia was reach and prosperous place)
was also a factor.
